The problem

The internet is heavier than it looks.

Every streamed video, AI query, and cloud sync emits carbon. Most "green" claims online are unverifiable, one-time, and disconnected from the user actually causing the load.

Today · 2024

460TWh

What the world's data centres used last year

More electricity than the whole of France uses in a year.

What it means · Roughly the carbon footprint of ~100 million cars driven for a year.

By 2030

1,000+TWh

Projected demand in just 6 years

More than double today — mostly to power AI.

What it means · Adds the emissions of a mid-sized country to the atmosphere — every year.

Right now

~0%

Of this is visible to everyday users

You stream, chat, scroll — the carbon cost stays hidden.

What it means · An average web user causes ~400 kg of CO₂ a year without ever seeing it.

In plain English: the internet now runs on a power grid the size of a country — and it's set to double. Every click, query, and stream adds CO₂ to the air. Today, almost nobody sees that cost, and almost no one pays for it.

Sources

  1. 2024 data-centre electricity: IEA, Energy and AI (2025). Global electricity generation supplying data centres reached ~460 TWh in 2024 — roughly 1.5% of global electricity consumption, and more than the total annual electricity use of France.
  2. 2030 & 2035 projections: IEA, Energy and AI Base Case (2025). Data-centre electricity demand is projected to exceed 1,000 TWh by 2030 and reach ~1,300 TWh by 2035 — more than doubling in six years, with AI as the primary driver.
  3. User awareness: Qualitative framing — the carbon cost of digital activity is fully externalised and invisible to end users.
The status quo

Greenwashing as usual

  • One-off carbon credits bought years ago
  • Vague "we plant trees" with no proof
  • Offsets disconnected from real usage
  • Certifications no customer can verify
Clean Compute

A verifiable per-user commitment

  • Recurring, per-user monthly commitment
  • Each tree tagged, geo-located, monitored

How it works

Certification with the tree planting built in.

One commitment, one monthly fee. Clean Compute handles the reforestation, the verification, and the public proof — so being certified means trees are actually going in the ground.

The impact of 1 tree / user / month

What carbon neutral actually looks like.

One tree per user per month doesn't just cancel your footprint — it creates a measurable, living forest. Here's what that scales to.

120,000

Trees planted / year

A living forest growing every month. Each tree tagged, monitored, and verified.

2.6k t

CO₂ pulled from the atmosphere / year

That's your entire platform's footprint — and then some — locked away in solid wood and soil.

~300

Acres of new forest / year

At ~400 trees per acre, that's real habitat, biodiversity, and restored land.

Real-world equivalents

Put another way, that's like…

573 cars

Cars off the road

Equivalent to removing a gas car from the road for a full year.

517 homes

Homes powered

Enough clean offset to power an average home for a year.

4.1k flights

Flights offset

Equals the carbon from a round-trip NYC–London flight.

550.0M charges

Phone charges

More than enough to charge a smartphone every day for a year.

Sources & methodology

  1. Vehicle emissions: U.S. EPA, Greenhouse Gas Emissions from a Typical Passenger Vehicle. Average gasoline passenger vehicle emits ~4.6 metric tons of CO₂ per year.
  2. Home energy: U.S. EPA, Household Carbon Footprint Calculator. Average U.S. home energy use produces ~5.1 metric tons of CO₂ per year.
  3. Flight emissions: ICAO Carbon Emissions Calculator and industry carbon-offset standards. Round-trip NYC–London economy flight ≈ 0.5–0.8 metric tons CO₂ per passenger (direct fuel burn); ~0.65 t used here as a mid-range estimate.
  4. Smartphone charging: Based on ~12 Wh per full charge and U.S. average grid carbon intensity of ~0.4 kg CO₂/kWh, yielding ~0.0048 kg CO₂ per charge.
  5. Tree sequestration: Arbor Day Foundation / One Tree Planted forestry estimates. Young reforestation trees in temperate/subtropical zones sequester ~20–25 kg CO₂ per year; 22 kg used here as a conservative average.
  6. Forest density: Standard reforestation planting density of ~400 trees per acre (varies by species and region).

Clean Compute

A real tree. In real soil.

Erases a digital footprint

A single tree absorbs ~22 kg of CO₂ per year — more than enough to offset the average user's annual streaming, scrolling, and cloud-storage emissions.

Restores living ecosystems

Unlike paper carbon credits, your $2 funds real saplings in the ground — rebuilding soil, watersheds, and habitat for pollinators and wildlife.

Compounds every month

Forests grow. 1,000 subscribers becomes 12,000 trees in year one, 60,000 in year five — a measurable canopy your brand helped create.

FAQ

Questions about certification, counting & verification

Clean Compute certifies online platforms that commit to funding verified reforestation proportional to their active user base every month. The badge on your site proves you meet a public, auditable per-user tree standard — not vague offsetting promises.

We use your reported monthly active users (MAU) as the baseline. You choose a commitment tier (for example, 1 tree per 10 users, or 1 tree per user). Our dashboard syncs with your MAU each cycle and calculates the exact planting order. All counts are logged and match your verified badge number.

We partner with vetted reforestation organizations that map, monitor, and replace lost trees. Planting sites are selected for ecological impact and community benefit. You receive geo-tagged reports each cycle.

Most applications are reviewed within 3–5 business days. Once approved, your first planting cycle begins within 7 days and your badge goes live immediately. We also run quarterly audits to ensure ongoing compliance.

Yes. Every certified platform gets a public impact page showing total trees planted, CO₂ equivalents, and planting locations. You can embed this page or link to it from your footer, pricing page, or sustainability section.

Your monthly commitment scales with your MAU. If active users decrease, the next cycle adjusts automatically — you only plant for the users you have. No penalties, no rigid lock-ins.
